NEVER ENOUGH NEW COOL COLLECTIVE!

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008
The frequent Fabchannel visitor will already know Holland’s #1 jazz band, New Cool Collective. They will also agree with me when I say: “You can never have enough New Cool Collective!” These eight guys know to like no other how to bring jazz to the dancefloor. That’s why we’re very happy to announce another NCC webcast October 30th.

For those who have yet to experience a New Cool Collective show, they might want to have a look at these previous NCC concerts on Fabchannel

Earlier this year there was the one-time-off gig with Dutch rapper Typhoon:

But don’t forget to watch their 2007 video:

  New Cool Collective Biography

New Cool Collective is a Dutch jazz band that was founded by British-Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman. New Cool Collective often perform as a big band, that consists of 19 musicians. The band, who claims to ‘bring jazz to the dancefloor’, uses jazz, funk and latin influences to create an unique sound.

The jazz band soon made name for themselves when they released the 12” record called ‘Extended Play’ in 1995. As a result, New Cool Collective played numerous clubs and even the North Sea Festival ‘96. In 1997 the band released their first full album ‘Soul Jazz Latin Flavours Nineties Vibe’ and they embarked on a successful European club tour. The follow-up in 1998, ‘More Soul Jazz Latin Flavours Nineties Vibe’, made sure that New Cool Collective could claim their spot at the top. In 2000 the ‘big band edition’ was introduced and they recorded they album ‘Big!’ The album, that featured vocals of Trijntje Oosterhuis and Georgie Fame, was awarded with an Edison (prestigious Dutch music award). Their third album, ‘Bring It On’, was also nominated for an Edison in 2003.

The double album ‘Trippin’ featuring Tony Allen was released on Dox Records in 2005. Together with Tony, New Cool Collective also played Lowland festival in the same year. In 2007 they supported Jules Deelder on his Dutch theatre tour and that same year a live album is released by the ‘big band’ edition of the New Cool Collective. The band released ‘Out Of Office’ in 2008, an album that contains more cinematic sounds and rock styles. The record sounds jazzy and danceable as always, but deeper and darker than their previous work. Through the years, New Cool Collective has played numerous shows and festivals like Roskilde, Sziget and Lowlands.

THERE ‘S A ‘BLUE EYED’ SOUL VIRUS COMING UP

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008
At the beginning of this summer we were told about this amazing young soulsinger called Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed. We were very happy to be able to record this amazing talent, who is the perfect example of what is called blue-eyed-soul.

Eli Reed is new in the scene. The two soul-men we’ve got coming up for you in the next days have been around in the game for some time now. I’m talking about Jersey shore scene’s Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes and James Hunter, one of the best soulsingers around in the UK.

To get that ’soul-virus’ starting check these videos:

Both will be webcast live. Friday Southside Johnny is up and on Monday it’s James Hunter’s turn.

For more info on these guys and the webcasts go to:

LOTS OF NEW CONCERTS COMING UP NEXT WEEK!

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008
Hi there. Things have been a little quiet lately, but that will soon change. Due to some work on our studio we unfortunately unable to record and webcast any concerts over the last few week. As from Tuesday, we’re going to make that up to you.

We already hope to record a few shows this weekend, but will have the first live webcast again on Tuesday with Kayak, the legendary Dutch symphonic rock band.

In contrary to Kayak who’ve been around for years, Wednesday’s local heroes are on the verge of breaking through. Around midnight you can tune in again to Fabchannel to check out the talent running around here in Holland during the monthly Local Only! night.

On Thursday we keep on going strong when the Danish ‘Elvis-metal’ band Volbeat pays a visit to the Paradiso. The show has been sold out for quit some time now and promises to bring us some rock’n roll like it ought to be!

Earlier this year they released a live DVD, you might want to check out the trailer below.

Official DVD Trailer 2 VOLBEAT live sold out

Than there’s Friday on which we can blues into the weekend with Jersey shore scene’s very own Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

We’ll won’t bother you on your Saturday night. I’m sure you’ll have better things to do than watching videos on the big web. We will help you end the weekend with a bang thought, when we’ll webcast Disco Ensemble’s Paradiso concert. I added a little video to give you an idea of what to expect.

Of course we have many more up our sleves for the upcoming weeks and months. Just be sure to keep an eye on the site!

WATCH THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKER AMSTERDAM CONCERT

Friday, August 29th, 2008
For all you rednecks out there, we’ve got some good old southern style rock. All the way from Athens, Georgia The Drive-By Truckers came to Amsterdam. Of course we were there to record the show. With no les than three guitarists these guys (and girl) sure know how to rock. The video recording of their entire Paradiso, Amsterdam gig is now out at www.fabchannel.com/drive_by_truckers or just watch it here!

  About Drive-By Truckers

Drive-By Truckers is a five-piece southern rock band from Athens, Georgia. Their alternative country is characterized by the use of three guitars together with bass and drums. Their songs revolve around stories about drifters and outlaws and how they cope in poor situations.

High-School friends Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley founded Drive-By Truckers in 1996. Earlier, they had already been playing together in several bands, among which Adam’s House Cat.

After two studio releases, ‘Gangstabilly’ (1998), ‘Pizza Deliverance’ (1999) and the live record ‘Alabama Ass Whuppin” (1999), Drive-By Truckers started to work on their masterpiece ‘Southern Rock Opera’. This 2001 double CD is based on the history of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

This record was a huge underground success, and the band eventually signed with New West Records. In early 2008 Drive-By Truckers released their 8th record called ‘Brigher Than Creation’s Dark’.

Friday, August 29th, 2008
Yes, we finally got the GO! The long-awaited Elbow show is finally online! I have to admit, it took quit some time. But I assure you it was all worth the wait.   About Elbow

Elbow is a Manchester based indie pop/rock band. Its music can be placed somewhere between Radiohead and Coldplay. Over the years Elbow’s innovative sound and candid and evocative lyrics have been praised by the likes of Blur, R.E.M, U2 and John Cale.

Lead singer Guy Garvey met guitarist Mark Potter at college in 1990, who was in a band with drummer Richard Jupp and bassist Pete Turner. Guy joined the band, and so did Mark’s brother Craig. At first they called themselves Mr. Soft, which was later changed to Soft and finally into Elbow.

Elbow’s first three EP’s were given extensive airplay on BBC Radio 1. In 2001 their debut album ‘Asleep In The Back’ was released on V2 and gained them several award nominations (a.o. for the NME and Brit Awards). ‘Cast of Thousands’ (2003) and ‘Leaders Of The Free World’ (2005) followed.

The fourth Elbow record ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ was issued in March 2008. The British quintet recorded this record without any help from outside the band.

VIDEO JENNY OWEN YOUNGS CONCERT OUT NOW!

Thursday, August 21st, 2008
Jenny Owen Youngs (1981) is an American singer/songwriter from Montclair, New Jersey. On her MySpace she is described as “a feisty, hyper-sensitive, disease-free singer/songwriter/former girl scout who wants to be your friend, claiming influences from Beck to Jesus Christ Superstar to Britney Spears”. The results are splendid guitar pop songs about everything you can imagine, which won’t leave your head again.

She’s the latest addition to our extensive collection of intimate songwriter concerts like those of Laura Marling, Ane Brun and Iron and Wine. Have a look for yourselves and be mesmerised by the sounds of Jenny Owen Youngs.

Before Jenny Owen Youngs picked up the guitar at the age of 14, she had already been playing the flute and tuba. Jenny graduated at Purchase College with a degree in Studio Compositions.

Jenny Owen Youngs self-released her debut album ‘Batten The Hatches’ in 2005. Initially the album hadn’t been too successful, but after the song ‘Fuck Was I’ was used in an episode of the television series Weeds, ‘Batten The Hatches’ was re-released by the Canadian label Nettwerk in 2007.

In the meantime Jenny has been touring with Vienna Tang, Aimee Mann and Sean Hayes. She has also released a cover of Nelly’s ‘Hot In Here’.

Besides her solo career, Jenny Owen Youngs is a member of a band called The Robot Explosion and takes part in the MySpace podcast ‘Once More With Feeling’.

CONCERT VIDEO THE WAR ON DRUGS OUT NOW

Thursday, August 21st, 2008
The Philadelphia based rock quintet The War On Drugs signed to the Secretly Canadian label, home of Anthony and the Johnsons and Jens Lekman, in early 2008. Shortly after they released their debut album ‘Wagonwheel Blues’. To promote their new record they came over to Amsterdam and played an excellent show at Paradiso’s small hall. You can now watch the entire gig at www.fabchannel.com/the_war_on_drugs or in the player below. Enjoy! It’s one of my favourites at this moment.

In their own words, The War On Drugs brings a dose of West Coast to the streets of Philadelphia. Their music will remind you of 80’s guitars like those of Sonic Youth and mesmerizing lyrics and vocals like those of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.

The War On Drugs came into existence after several sessions between frontman Adam Granduciel and guitarist Kurt Vile, two huge Bob Dylan fans that met each other in 2003. Percussionists Kyle Loyd and Charlie Hall and bass-player Dave Hartley completed the line-up in 2005.

The Philadelphia five quickly became a familiar face in their hometown’s club scene. It didn’t take long before they were playing in New York and other cities. They finished their ‘Barrels Of Batteries’ EP in 2007, which can still be downloaded for free at the Secretly Canadian website. On year later The War On Drugs were signed and released their first record.

The B-52’s concert video new in archive!

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
Some of you already noticed, but the B-52’s concert video is now available to watch in our archive! On the 19th of July the cheerful pop band performed at a sold out Paradiso and we were lucky to record the show. You were there? Lucky bastard, go check it out again! Were you not? Check it out anyway. Enjoy!

  The B-52’s biography

After a drunken night at a Chinese restaurant, Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and her brother Ricky founded the new wave pop band the B-52’s in 1976. The band’s name alludes to the beehive hairdo wigs that singers Cindy and Kate were often wearing.

The Athens (U.S.) based band had little or even no experience in playing music and performed their first shows with percussion and guitar recordings on tape. After playing several shows at music club CBGB in New York, the B-52’s drew the attention of the New York press.

The B-52’s released their self-titled debut album in 1979, followed up by ‘Wild Planet’ in 1980, which reached the top 20 in the U.S. charts. After releasing ‘Mesopotamia’ in 1982 and ‘Whammy!’ in 1983, the five-piece returned to the studio to record 1986’s ‘Bouncing Off the Satellites’. During the recording of this album, Ricky Wilson died from an AIDS related illness. After his death the other band members found it impossible to promote the album.

1989’s ‘Cosmic Thing’ was the most successful recording till this date, including hit singles ‘Love Shack’, ‘Roam’ and ‘Deadbeat Club’. After releasing ‘Good Stuff’ in 1992, the B-52’s finally returned with new material in 2008 with the release of ‘Funplex’.
