At the beginning of this summer we were told about this amazing young soulsinger called Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed. We were very happy to be able to record this amazing talent, who is the perfect example of what is called blue-eyed-soul.
Eli Reed is new in the scene. The two soul-men we’ve got coming up for you in the next days have been around in the game for some time now. I’m talking about Jersey shore scene’s Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes and James Hunter, one of the best soulsingers around in the UK.
To get that ’soul-virus’ starting check these videos:
Both will be webcast live. Friday Southside Johnny is up and on Monday it’s James Hunter’s turn.
It’s been a while since we recorded a nice punk-rock show, but next Sunday, October 12th, this is finally going to change. That’s when we’ll webcast the entire concert of Disco Ensemble, the Helsinki based post-hardcore/punk-rock band.
Disco Ensemble will be playing Paradiso’s small hall at six o’clock in the evening. I know this seems very early, but it will not stop these guys from putting on a great show.
To get an idea of what I’m talking about, just have a look at the video below of their performance at the Ruisrock festival.
Disco Ensemble Biography
Disco Ensemble is a post-hardcore / punk rock band from Helsinki, Finland. Originally named ‘DisCo’, the band was founded in 1996 by two high school friends, Jussi Ylikoski and Mikko Hakila (the name ‘DisCo’ born out of the genius idea of making people think they were going to a disco but really ending up at a punk concert). When singer Miikka Koivisto joined the band and a new pop band called Disco became popular, the guys decided to change their name to the equally misleading Disco Ensemble. But there is no need to mislead anymore for ‘Finland’s best kept secret’ to get packed venues. After years of playing in the Finnish underground scene, they were finally noticed by Fullsteam Records. As things got more serious, they moved the band to Helsinki where they found the final addition to the band, bass player Lasse Lindfors.
Their debut album ‘Viper Ethics’ (2003) was met with great reviews and with one big bang, ‘Disco Ensemble’, had claimed their spot in the punk genre. From thereon the band played many venues and festivals all across Europe.
The second album ‘First Aid Kit’ came out in 2005 and was the next big step to success for the Finnish group. Featuring singles ‘Black Euro’ and ‘We Might Fall Apart’ the album topped album charts across Europe. All of a sudden they were playing festivals like Roskilde, Rock am Ring and even Glastonbury. No one could deny their success anymore and after signing to Vertigo Records ‘First Aid Kit’ was released in more than 20 countries worldwide.
In spring 2008 they released their third album, called ‘Magic Recoveries’ which saw Disco Ensemble reach the number one position in the Finnish album charts and also get nominated for a MTV Video Music Award. On this third album Disco Ensemble has added synthesizers to their sound without losing touch with authentic punkrock.

Volbeat Biography
Volbeat is a Danish metal band that was founded by Micheal Poulsen in 2001. But they can’t just be classed as metal. Rockabilly, rock ‘n’ roll and even country are some of the styles that can be heard in their unique sound. The Danish group, influenced by legends as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, is known as the founder of ‘Elvis-Metal’.
In 2003 Volbeat had their first success when releasing their second demo called ‘Beat the Meat’. From thereon things only went up for the band. Airplay on European radio, touring with big European and American metal bands, and a contract with the label Rebel Monster followed quickly.
Their debut album ‘The Strength / The Sound/The Songs’ was released on Rebel Monster in 2005. Numerous awards and chart topping album sales, saw Volbeat exceeded all expectations. In 2006, a year in which the band played almost every major festival in Europe, the success story continued.
In 2007, Volbeat’s second album ‘Rock the Rebel/ Metal the Devil’ went straight in at number 1 in the Danish album charts. That same year the band performed opening shows for Metallica and Megadeth.
Volbeat’s third album called ‘Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood’ was released in 2008. Number 1 position in several albums charts followed once again. ‘Maybellene i Hofteholder’ was the first single that was featured on the album.
Hi there. Things have been a little quiet lately, but that will soon change. Due to some work on our studio we unfortunately unable to record and webcast any concerts over the last few week. As from Tuesday, we’re going to make that up to you.

In contrary to Kayak who’ve been around for years, Wednesday’s local heroes are on the verge of breaking through. Around midnight you can tune in again to Fabchannel to check out the talent running around here in Holland during the monthly Local Only! night.
On Thursday we keep on going strong when the Danish ‘Elvis-metal’ band Volbeat pays a visit to the Paradiso. The show has been sold out for quit some time now and promises to bring us some rock’n roll like it ought to be!

Thursday July 24th Fabchannel will live webcast the first ever concert in the Netherlands of Jack McManus. Lucky Jack will play his first Holland gig in one the most beautiful venues of the country, Paradiso’s small hall.
Our friends at Universal Music brought this young, curly haired singer, under our attention. We were happily surprised by his fresh sounding piano pop and are more than willing to record his Paradiso show.
Have a little warm-up fun with this video we found of Jack live at a Dutch national radio station 3FM:
Jack McManus biography
British songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jack McManus (1984) was educated at the renowned BRIT school, where he was Amy Winehouse’s classmate. Also Katie Melua, Kate Nash and Adele enjoyed their education here.
In April 2008 Jack released the single ‘Bang On The Piano’ and his debut album ‘Either Side Of Midnight’, an amenable record, stuffed with infectious piano-driven pop songs. Beside the piano, Jack McManus also plays trumpet and drums.
Jack McManus’ father introduced him to the world of rock’n roll at a young age. He was responsible for the pyrotechnics at shows of a.o. Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Ozzy Osbourne and Bon Jovi. He made Jack listen to Elton John and Billy Joel who later became a great inspiration to Jack’s music.
We’ve got some real soul music coming up for you tomorrow, Eli “Paperboy” Reed and The True Lovers. He is one of the hottest soul/R&B artists of the moment and is already compared to some of the greatest names around. We’ll be webcasting his Amsterdam concert tomorrow (Wednesday July 15th) night at Fabchannel.
I found a video of his 2007 SXSW show to give you an idea of what to expect.
Eli “Paperboy” Reed Biography
Eli “Paperboy” Reed is a white guy from the US who surprises you with his genuine soul in style of the great Otis Redding and Sam Cooke.
His powerful voice and own songs and arrangements bring the 60’s back to life.
He grew up in Brookline, MA. Growing up he was exposed to an excess of music. His father was a music critic and gave him full access to his record collection. Eli Reed absorbed as much as he could. In the end it was the gospel, soul, blues and R&B that stole his hart. He taught himself to play the piano, guitar and harmonica and putt his skills to test by busking the streets.
Eli Reed got at job in Mississippi and started playing in clubs there and at one point even ended up on stage with drummer Sam Carr. It was in Mississippi that he got his nickname Paperboy, because of the newsboy style hat he wore at the time.
Back in Boston Eli Reed formed his band The True Lovers and released the cover record ‘Sings “Walkin’ and Talkin’ (For My Baby)” and Other Smash Hits’ in 2005. After a successful gig at 2007’s SXSW he signed to Q Division on which he released his second record, with only own material, ‘Roll With You’.
Fashionably late, we got the go to webcast tonight’s Duffy concert at the end of the day yesterday. We’re really thrilled to add this (rising) star on to our ever-growing collection of concert videos!
I hope this message gets to you in time for the live stream. If not, don’t worry, because as always the show will be archived later on.
Here’s a little preview of Duffy’s performance at Glastonbury this weekend:
About Duffy
Inspired by Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark, Amy Ann Duffy brings you straight back to the soulful pop music of the 60’s. The singer from Wales is known for her amazing melodic voice, which is often compared to that of Amy Winehouse.
Duffy was born in 1984 in a small village called Nefyn in Wales. When she was a teenager she played in many local bands. In 2003 she participated in Wawffactor, an alternative version of Pop Idol and finished second. Duffy appeared on Later with Jools Holland in 2007. That same year Polydor signed the talented singer and shortly after her breakthrough was a fact.
In March 2008 Duffy released her debut album ‘Rockferry’ which immediately topped the UK and many other European charts. ‘Mercy’, one of the singles taken from this album, was good for many number 1 listings and a MOJO Award for ‘Song of the Year’ in 2008.
This Thursday, June 26th, the Howlin Rain Amsterdam concert will be webcast live on Fabchannel… where else. The video webcast will start somewhere around 20:00 CET at www.fabchannel.com/howlin_rain
We wrote a little story on Howlin Rain, but sound and video always says more. So you might wanna watch this video I found.
Howlin Rain is a rock band from San Francisco formed in 2004. While he was still with his former band (noise rock band Comets on Fire), lead singer Ethan Miller wanted more melody in his music. He also wanted to express the influence of growing up on the Lost Coast (California). That’s why he formed Howlin Rain together with his former high school band-mate Ian Gradek (bass guitar). Mike Jackson (guitar), Eli Eckert (guitar) Garett Goddard (drums) and Joel Robinow (keyboard) complete the band.
The music of the six-piece band is influenced by the strong but easygoing grooves of West Coast 70’s rock, in combination with blues, classic and psychedelic rock. In 2006 Howlin Rain started touring as opening act for Queens of the Stone Age.
Until this date, Howlin Rain released two albums on the independent Birdman label. 2006’s Debut album ‘Howlin Rain’ was followed up by Magnificent Friend in 2008.
We have a very special live webcast for you tonight. In collaboration with Amsterdam Roots Festival, Paradiso brings Turkish electro-folk band Orient Expressions to Amsterdam. But they won’t perform by their selves tonight. Turkish singer Aylin Aslim will complete the line-up together with our own Amsterdam Klezmer Band! So tune in on Fabchannel tonight, at 21:00 CET!
About:
Orient Expressions is a project from Istanbul, Turkey. The band is a collaboration between Dj Yakuza, Cem Yldz and Richard Hamer. The three combine electronic music with Turkish folk music with jazzy vibes and traditional percussion rhythms.
At this show, Orient Expressions will be performing with Turkish singer and fellow citizen Aylin Aslim. Aylin was born in a village called Lich in Germany and decided later on to move to Turkey. There she started her musical career releasing her techno-pop album ‘Gelgit’. After this, she switched to pop/rock music.
The Amsterdam Klezmer Band complete the line-up. These seven Dutch Musicians play a refreshing mix of traditional Balkan and klezmer music. In 1996 Saxophone player Job Chajes started the band and directly impressed the public with their live performances. Later on they successfully collaborated with famous Dutch artists like C-mon & Kypski, Postmen and Normaal.

Elbow is a Manchester based indie pop/rock band. Its music can be placed somewhere between Radiohead and Coldplay. Over the years Elbow’s innovative sound and candid and evocative lyrics have been praised by the likes of Blur, R.E.M, U2 and John Cale.Lead singer Guy Garvey met guitarist Mark Potter at college in 1990, who was in a band with drummer Richard Jupp and bassist Pete Turner.
