Dimmu Borgir is a symphonic black metal band from Norway. The band was founded in 1993 by Shagrath, Silenoz and Tjodalv. Dimmu Borgir means dark castles. The name derives from a volcanic formation found in Iceland called Dimmuborgir.
The typical Dimmu Borgir sound can be recognized by the voice (scream) of Shagrath, influences of classic composers like Richard Wagner, fast drums, aggressive guitars and symphonic synthesizers. The first Dimmu Borgir albums, like 'Stormblast', featured only Norwegian lyrics. After the success of these albums and the fact that most fans didn't speak Norwegian they began to sing in English. From 'Devil's Path' (1996 ) to 2007's 'In Sorte Diaboli' al lyrics have been mainly English.
