Gem is an energetic indie rock band from Utrecht, Holland, consisting of singer Maurits Westerik, guitarist Vincent Lemmen, bass player Jeroen Kikkert and drummer Wouter Rentema. In 2003 Maurits met Vincent, Gem's former bass player Bas De Graaff and former guitarist Simon Bonner. Soon after, they recorded their first demo.

That same year they discovered that the Libertines were playing a gig at Melkweg, They didn't hesitate and sent an email to the programmer. Gem ended up playing a successful gig supporting the famous British band.

At the end of 2003, Gem signed a deal with Dutch record label Excelsior Recordings. The company was very impressed by the band's mix of rock 'n roll, British punk and modern rock inspired by The Libertines and The Strokes.

In 2004 Gem won an Essent Award (for best upcoming band) and performed at the Metropolis and Lowlands festival. A year later their single 'So Good To Know You' featured in a Dutch TV commercial for Randstad, which meant their big break.

Gem's debut album 'Tell Me What's New' was released in 2004, followed by 'Escapades' in 2006' and 'New' in 2008.
