Midlake was formed in 1999 by a group of jazz students at the University of North Texas. Their initial work consisted of funk/jazz music. Later the band began to lean more toward an indie rock sound. Midlake began writing songs that were influenced by bands such as Radiohead, Travis, and Grandaddy.
They released their debut album, 'Bamnan And Silvercork' in June of 2004. It became an instant favourite for many critics and fans worldwide. Skateboarding legend Jason Lee became a huge supporter of the band and he joined forces with Midlake. He directed and filmed the single 'Balloon Maker'.
For their second album, the band developed a more '70's sound with more guitars and vocals and less keyboard. In 2006 they released the album 'The Trials of Van Occupanther'.
