Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic power metal group. Tuomas, keyboardist of the band, formed the band in 1996. The name of the band comes from spending a night around a campfire with friends.
Nightwish is considered one of the bands responsible for the rise in popularity and creation of the symphonic metal genre.
Although Nightwish has been popular in their home country, since the release of their first single 'The Carpenter' and their album 'Angels Fall First' in 1997. They did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of there second album 'Oceanborn'. There most successful album so far is their 2004 album 'Once' which became triple platinum in Finland. On this album is the hit single 'Nemo'.
In 2005 Tarja Turunen (singer) left the band, the search for a new singer ended in 2007 by the arrival of Anette Olzon. She sings on the album 'Dark Passion Play' which is released in 2007.
