Black Eyed Peas were founded in 1992 by Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap, but was first called Atban Klann,. Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap grew up in Los Angeles and were part of Tribal Nation, a break-dancing group. Eventually their focus switched to making hiphop music.
In 1992 Eazy-E (ex-member of gangster rap group N.W.A.) signed the rappers on his Ruthless Records label. Eventually they wouldn't release any albums on Ruthless Records. They recorded one album, but the staff of the record label didn't have a clue how to market a peace minded band like Atban Klann.
After Eazy-E died in 1995, Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap continued making music as Black Eyed Peas, together with Taboo. They released their debut 'Behind the Front' in 1998 which was followed up by 'Bridging the Gap' in 2000.
With the arrival of new band member Fergie and the release of their third album 'Elephunk', the Black Eyed Peas got their big break in 2003. 'Elephunk' included worldwide hits like 'Where it the Love', 'Hey Mama' and 'Let's Get it Started'. In 2005 Black Eyed Peas released 'Monkey Business', which included the hits 'Pump It' and 'Don't Phunk With My Heart'.
