Ben Chijoke, better known as rapper Ty, was born in London. His parents emigrated from Nigeria to the British capitol. In the mid-'90s, Ty started recording his works and appeared on tracks by a.o. MC Mell 'O', DJ Shortee Blitz and DJ Pogo. Meanwhile he hosted several hip hop events and worked for Ghetto Gramma, a poetry workshop.
In 2001 Ty released his debut album 'Awkward' on the Big Dada Label, followed by 'Upwards' in 2004. 'Upwards' received a nomination for the Mercury Prize. Two years later he recorded the song 'The Idea' with De La Soul and released his third album 'Closer'. This album contains collaborations with De La Soul, Arrested Development and Basement Jaxx singer Vula Malinga.
